Campers looking for classic Western New York wilderness paired with well-managed facilities will find it at Cain Hollow Campers, located within the vast expanse of Allegany State Park.
Spanning more than 65,000 acres, Allegany State Park is the largest state park in New York and is widely regarded as a flagship outdoor destination. Cain Hollow Campers offers a convenient base for exploring the park’s forested valleys, rolling terrain, and abundant wildlife, while maintaining clear guidelines that keep shared resources operating smoothly. Water spigots are located throughout the camping loops for shared use; campers may briefly hook up to fill their onboard tanks but must disconnect immediately afterward. Continuous hose connections are not permitted anywhere in the park, ensuring fair access and system reliability for all visitors.
The park itself is divided into two major developed areas—the Red House Area and the Quaker Run Area—each offering its own character and attractions. The Red House Area is home to landmarks such as Stone Tower, the Summit Fire Tower, Red House Lake, Bridal Falls, and the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area. Five miles of paved trails around Red House make it especially popular with walkers, runners, and bicyclists. The Quaker Run Area features Quaker Lake, the Mount Tuscarora Fire Tower, Science Lake, Bear Caves, Thunder Rocks, and the Quaker Amphitheater, drawing visitors interested in geology, hiking, and educational programming.
Recreation opportunities at Allegany State Park extend through all four seasons. Warm-weather activities include swimming at sandy beaches, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, biking, picnicking, and field sports such as baseball, softball, and tennis. In winter, the park transforms into a regional hub for outdoor enthusiasts, offering ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and access to 90 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area is widely recognized for having some of the finest groomed cross-country ski and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. Many park amenities and activities are accessible to visitors with disabilities.
Accommodations are extensive and varied, ranging from 303 campsites and 336 cabins to eight cottages and two group camps. The seven Fancher Cottages—named for Senator Albert T. Fancher—are fully equipped, open year-round, and accessible. The Pitt Cottage, located in the Red House Area, offers similar amenities in a lodge-style setting. Additional facilities throughout the park include picnic pavilions, a gift shop, and shower buildings.
Beyond the park’s borders, visitors can easily extend their trip with stops at nearby destinations such as Letchworth State Park, Lake Erie State Park, Long Point State Park on Lake Chautauqua, Evangola State Park, Woodlawn Beach State Park, or entertainment and gaming at Seneca Nation Casino. To the south, the park borders the Allegheny National Forest, further expanding outdoor exploration options.
With its combination of clear camper policies, diverse accommodations, and unmatched recreational variety, Cain Hollow Campers and Allegany State Park continue to stand out as a premier destination for both short stays and extended outdoor vacations in Western New York.
