Barcelona Lighthouse: The World's First Natural Gas Lighthouse

Standing proudly above the shores of Portland Harbor, the Barcelona Lighthouse is one of New York's most remarkable historic landmarks. Completed in 1829, the 40-foot-tall lighthouse holds the distinction of being the world's first lighthouse illuminated by natural gas, marking a significant milestone in the history of maritime navigation.

For three decades, the lighthouse served under the Federal Lighthouse Service, guiding ships safely along the Lake Erie shoreline until 1859. After its federal service ended, ownership passed through several private hands, preserving the structure's legacy for future generations.

A new chapter in the lighthouse's history began in 2007 when it was acquired by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Although the original lighthouse lens is no longer in place and the tower no longer functions as an active navigational aid, it continues to shine each night through a partnership with the Town of Westfield. Today, its illuminated beacon serves as a tribute to its pioneering past rather than a guide for mariners.

The Barcelona Lighthouse is recognized for its historical significance and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can explore the site and appreciate its rich maritime heritage while enjoying scenic views of Lake Erie and the surrounding landscape.

Those planning a visit should be aware that the Barcelona Lighthouse Revitalization Project, which began in 2024, is ongoing. Phase 1, focused on rehabilitating the lighthouse tower, has been completed successfully. During 2025, work will continue with slope stabilization and pathway improvements, which may temporarily limit access to certain areas of the grounds. Visitors are encouraged to respect posted closures and note that hunting is strictly prohibited on both the upper and lower lighthouse grounds.

As one of the earliest examples of innovation in lighthouse technology, the Barcelona Lighthouse remains an enduring symbol of engineering achievement, preservation, and New York's rich maritime history.
