Nestled in New York's scenic Finger Lakes Region, Taughannock Falls State Park is home to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the northeastern United States. Famous for its breathtaking 215-foot waterfall, towering cliffs, and picturesque hiking trails, the park offers visitors an unforgettable outdoor experience filled with natural beauty, recreation, and history.
A Waterfall Like No Other
The centerpiece of Taughannock Falls State Park is the magnificent Taughannock Falls, which plunges an impressive 215 feet into a dramatic gorge. Surrounding the falls are rocky cliffs that rise nearly 400 feet above the gorge, creating a stunning natural amphitheater that attracts visitors year-round. Whether viewed from the rim trails above or from the base at the end of the gorge trail, the waterfall provides incredible photo opportunities and breathtaking scenery.
One of the park's most popular attractions is the ¾-mile Gorge Trail. This relatively flat and accessible path leads visitors through a peaceful wooded gorge directly to the base of the falls. Suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities, the trail offers a close-up view of the towering cliffs and the park's iconic waterfall.

Outdoor Recreation for Every Season
Taughannock Falls State Park offers far more than spectacular scenery. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. During the warmer months, campsites and cozy cabins overlooking Cayuga Lake provide an ideal setting for camping and family vacations. A marina, boat launch, and swimming beach offer opportunities for boating, fishing, and relaxing by the water.
The park's multi-use trails are perfect for hiking and nature walks in spring, summer, and fall. In winter, these same trails become popular routes for cross-country skiing. The park also features sledding hills and natural skating ponds, making it a favorite destination for cold-weather recreation.
Learning Through Nature
Nature enthusiasts can deepen their appreciation of the Finger Lakes through educational programs offered by the Finger Lakes Environmental Education Department. Free guided gorge tours and educational presentations are held at Taughannock Falls State Park, as well as Buttermilk Falls, Robert H. Treman, and Watkins Glen State Parks.
These programs explore the region's unique geology, wildlife, and ecosystems. While registration is not required, visitors should note that standard park parking fees may apply.
The Fascinating Story Behind the Finger Lakes
The stunning landscape surrounding Taughannock Falls was shaped over thousands of years by powerful glaciers and flowing streams. Approximately 10,000 years ago, as the last glacier retreated northward, it carved deep valleys that eventually filled with water, creating the eleven Finger Lakes.
Over time, streams flowing down the steep hillsides carried sediment and gradually eroded the area's soft sedimentary rock. This natural process formed the dramatic gorges, towering cliffs, and breathtaking waterfalls that define the Finger Lakes Region today.

Facilities for Gatherings and Events
Taughannock Falls State Park is also an excellent venue for family reunions, picnics, and special events. The park features three pavilions that accommodate groups ranging from 25 to 100 people. Rental rates typically range from $50 to $200, and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the park's reservation system.

Hunting Regulations and Visitor Safety
During designated hunting seasons, bow hunting for deer is permitted in approved areas of the park. Hunters must possess a valid New York State hunting license with the appropriate hunting stamps, which serves as the required regional hunting permit.
To ensure the safety of all visitors, designated safety zones and restricted areas are clearly marked throughout the park. Informational signs are posted during hunting season to notify visitors of hunting activity. Handguns are prohibited within the park, and trapping is not permitted.
