WINDHAM, N.Y. – A 68-year-old hiker from Oneonta was rescued late at night after suffering an ankle injury while on the Black Dome Mountain trail in Greene County.
On August 14, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Greene County 911 requested assistance from New York State Forest Rangers after reports came in of a hiker with an unstable ankle injury about two miles up the trail.
Forest Rangers began their response and reached the injured man around 9 p.m. Despite the rugged terrain and fading daylight, Rangers quickly stabilized the hiker, provided medical assistance, and packaged him for a carry-out rescue.
The rescue mission required navigating steep and rocky sections of the trail. After several hours, Rangers successfully carried the hiker back to the trailhead, arriving at approximately 1 a.m.
Officials say the hiker is expected to recover, and the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly accidents can occur in the backcountry, even for experienced hikers. Forest Rangers encourage outdoor enthusiasts to always hike with proper footwear, carry a first aid kit, and be prepared for emergencies when venturing into the Catskills.
