Tucked away on Heart Island in the middle of the mighty St. Lawrence River, Boldt Castle is more than just stone and spires — it’s a living love story, a must-see New York landmark, and hands-down one of the most magical destinations in the Thousand Islands region.
If you're looking for a day trip that feels like a fairytale, this is it.

💔 A Love Story Carved in Stone
Boldt Castle was commissioned in 1900 by millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt, who dreamed of building a full-blown Rhineland-style castle for his beloved wife, Louise. This was no ordinary gesture — the man literally reshaped Heart Island into the shape of a heart.
But tragedy struck. In 1904, Louise died unexpectedly, and George immediately halted all construction. The castle sat abandoned for over 70 years — a beautiful but heartbreaking symbol of lost love.
🛥️ Getting There Is Part of the Magic
You can only reach Heart Island by boat — and that’s half the fun. Hop aboard a water taxi or take a scenic Uncle Sam Boat Tour from Alexandria Bay or Clayton. As you approach the island, the turrets and stone towers come into view, rising from the trees like something out of a storybook.
🏛️ What You’ll See Inside
After decades of neglect, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took over in 1977 and began restoring the castle to its former glory — and wow, did they deliver.
Inside the castle you’ll explore:
The grand marble staircase
Ornate bedrooms and ballrooms
A stained-glass dome
Louise’s beautifully restored drawing room
And breathtaking views from the upper balconies
There’s also the Alster Tower (aka the "Playhouse") with a built-in bowling alley and billiard room — because apparently, romance also includes games.
📸 Perfect for Photos, Picnics, and Daydreaming
Whether you’re a history buff, architecture lover, or just someone who appreciates a killer view, Boldt Castle is a total showstopper. Bring your camera, pack a picnic, and give yourself time to wander the island grounds, complete with gazebos, fountains, and manicured gardens that would make Versailles jealous.
💡 Know Before You Go:
🕘 Open: May through October (seasonal, check online for exact dates)
🎟️ Admission: There’s an entrance fee to Heart Island + boat fare
🚫 Note: U.S. citizens must carry ID; Canadian visitors need a passport
✨ Why It’s a Must-See
There are castles in Europe, sure. But how often do you get to explore a real castle right here in Upstate New York — one that floats in the middle of a river and holds a love story in every stone?
Trust us — Boldt Castle is worth the trip, the boat ride, and every single "wow" you’ll say when you walk through those doors.
