CHESTERFIELD, NY — A dramatic wildfire believed to be caused by a lightning strike broke out in the Town of Chesterfield on July 12, prompting a major emergency response across Essex County.
According to reports from Ray Brook Dispatch, the flames ignited in a wooded area and quickly spread across two acres, forcing multiple fire departments and New York State Forest Rangers into action. A unified command was established between Forest Ranger Black and the Keeseville Fire Department to coordinate the massive containment effort.
Crews from six fire departments, Keeseville EMS, and seven Forest Rangers worked tirelessly through the night and into the next day. Thanks to their swift action and teamwork, the blaze was successfully contained by the evening of July 13.
The fire is believed to have been sparked by lightning, a reminder of how volatile and unpredictable wildland conditions can be during summer months in the Adirondacks.
