HARRISON, NY — A Peregrine falcon is back in the wild after being rescued near the Kensico Reservoir in Westchester County.
On June 17, 2025, Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Franz responded to a report of an injured bird along the shoreline of the reservoir in the town of Harrison. Upon arrival, Officer Franz located the falcon perched on a rock just off the shore, appearing unable to fly or escape.
Although the bird showed no visible injuries, ECO Franz transported the raptor to a local wildlife rehabilitator as a precaution. The falcon, initially lethargic, responded well to care and made a swift recovery. After a brief stay, it was successfully released back into its natural habitat.
The Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), known as the fastest animal on Earth, can reach speeds of over 200 miles per hour during its hunting dive—called a "stoop"—to capture other birds mid-flight. The species' scientific name means "wandering falcon," a reference to their remarkable migratory journeys that can span up to 15,500 miles.
This successful rescue highlights the importance of swift action and wildlife rehabilitation in protecting New York’s native species.
