Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities

The park also provides regulated waterfowl hunting opportunities during New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and federal hunting seasons. Hunting at Fort Niagara State Park, along with Joseph Davis, Wilson-Tuscarora, and Golden Hill State Parks, is available by permit only.

Permits are issued through a weekly Thursday evening drawing held at Fort Niagara State Park. Hunters must possess a valid New York State hunting license, a Federal HIP number, a Federal Duck Stamp, and proof of successful completion of a Waterfowl Identification Course. In addition, hunters are required to have either a trained retrieval dog or a boat for retrieving harvested birds.

Permit holders must follow strict regulations, including:

• Complying with all federal and state hunting laws.

• Removing all spent shell casings and litter after the hunt.

• Registering every member of the hunting party on the permit, with no substitutions allowed.

• Setting up hunting blinds within 50 feet of the assigned blind marker.

• Hunting only over water, as permitted by park regulations.

Hunters should also stay informed about wildlife health advisories. New York State has detected Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (bird flu) in several waterfowl species, and visitors are encouraged to review current guidance before participating in hunting activities.
