🎣Trout Season is Back: 1.9 Million Fish Are Waiting for You!

Get your fishing gear ready because New York's spring trout fishing season officially kicks off on April 1st! With nearly 1.9 million trout stocked across the state, anglers can look forward to an unforgettable season filled with action.

Why This Season is Extra Special:

  • More Fish, More Fun: Thanks to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) extensive stocking program, ponds and streams are brimming with brook, brown, and rainbow trout.

  • Catch Some Big Ones: This year, 10% of stocked trout are over 12 inches long, offering prime opportunities for those trophy catches.

  • Continuous Stocking: 'Stocked-Extended' streams will be replenished every other week for two months, ensuring consistent fishing fun.

A Few Challenges to Note: While most hatcheries hit their trout production targets, last year’s drought impacted some brown trout growth. Expect a few smaller catches this season. Additionally, brook trout numbers are down due to a whirling disease outbreak at the Randolph Hatchery, but don’t worry – extra brown and rainbow trout have been added to keep the waters lively.

What is Whirling Disease? This parasite affects trout and salmon, causing erratic swimming and physical deformities. It’s harmless to humans, but DEC quickly responded by euthanizing affected fish to prevent the disease's spread. With proactive measures in place, future outbreaks are unlikely.

Helpful Resources for Anglers:

  • Trout Stream Fishing Map: Plan your perfect fishing trip with the interactive map on DECinfo Locator.

  • HuntFishNY App: Use the app's Tackle Box feature to find access sites, regulations, and stocking details.

  • Fishing Rod Lending: No gear? No problem! Many libraries across New York offer free fishing rod rentals.

Get Offline and Get Outside! This trout season is part of Governor Hochul’s "Get Offline, Get Outside" initiative, encouraging families to unplug and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-timer, there’s no better way to welcome spring.

So, what are you waiting for? Mark your calendar for April 1st and make this fishing season one to remember. Check the DEC website for trout stocking schedules and local regulations.

Tight lines and happy fishing! 🎣
